Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Patrick Manning told delegates that despite the global financial crisis, his country is doing well. The Caribbean twin island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, CHOGM, 2009. The Business Forum, which brings together some 700 governments and business leaders is being held on the cruise liner Serenade of the Seas which is docked in the Trinidad and Tobago capital, Port of Spain. The theme for the three day meeting is ‘Partnering for a More Equitable and Sustainable Future: The Commonwealth and the Americas’. The forum will provide opportunities for policy discussions, networking and partnerships.

Madrid (Revista E) - The Madrid Region has received a total of €1.897m (approx. US$ 2.830m) in gross foreign investment in the first half of 2009, representing 51% of the national total. The key to Madrid’s success among foreign investors is due largely to its economy’s dynamism. Among Spain’s large regional economies, it is the region where most businesses are created, as well as that which has the highest activity rates, lowest unemployment and highest income per capita (€32,047 - approx US$ 47,839). The Regional Government strives to create a ‘business-friendly’ environment for foreign firms by eliminating bureaucratic obstacles and, within its jurisdiction, applying liberal policies such as the reduction of taxes or encouraging innovation and high value-added sectors.

untitled-13Kabul (Revista E) - The International Day of Peace (September 21) was first introduced by a United Nations resolution in 1981, to provide an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. Afghan President Karzai mentioned the importance for Peace Day and proclaimed a cease fire by the Afghan National Security Forces. In 2008 Peace Day, the violence was reduced by 70%. This year, no violence was registered.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Kamalesh Sharma, announced on September 1st that the Republic of the Fiji Islands stands fully suspended from membership of the Commonwealth with immediate effect. The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) last met on 31 July, to urge the Fiji regime to reactivate immediately the President’s Political Dialogue Forum (PPDF) process, facilitated by the Commonwealth and the United Nations, in a manner that was independent, inclusive, time-bound and without any pre-determined outcome, and that would lead to credible elections in the country by October 2010. CMAG had sought a firm commitment from Fiji to these terms by no later than 1 September 2009, failing which it would be fully suspended.
